Updated cockpit components a big improvement of fit for avid cyclist’s stock bike.
Steve is an avid cyclist who learned about our capabilities by attending a free 30 minute consultation with a friend. Though he had no intention of going through a fitting he felt he would benefit from one after seeing our process.
He has a stock bike and components that were fairly new. Steve felt that the saddle that was on his bike wasn’t working for him and he also felt excessive pressure on his hands while riding.
After completing the fitting process, a number of modifications were suggested. Steve needed to sit further back on his bike to more proportionately distribute his weight and get him in a more neutral position; a seatpost with more setback was installed. He tested a couple of saddles during the fitting and left the studio with a test ride saddle of his liking. After two weeks of riding he was satisfied with the saddle he chose so we replaced his stock saddle. The stock stem on his bike was replaced to put the handlebars in the proper position for him. The handlebars on his bike were too narrow for him so we recommended they be replaced with wider ones.
Another area of concern identified during the fitting was Steve’s knee tracking throughout the pedal stroke. We determined the poor knee tracking to be the result of too narrow of a stance width (his feet weren’t properly aligned under his hips). We tried a couple of different pedal spindle lengths until we determined the proper ones for him. The wider stance width resulted in a better knee tracking pattern which will hopefully limit his risk for knee injury in the future.
In summary, the entire cockpit (saddle, seatpost, bars and stem) were replaced to make Steve’s stock bike fit him almost as well as a custom bike. We also replaced the pedals with ones of proper spindle length to improve his knee tracking.
